Have you ever looked in your refrigerator and found a "science project" growing in there? If so, you are not alone. We waste an incredible amount of food in this country. I was reading in a Reuters news article that the average American throws away about 33 pounds of food at home each month- equal to roughly $40. That adds up to almost 400 pounds and $480 each year!

Bill has been struggling with maintaining his 20# weight loss. He reached his goal weight last August and was doing fine job of maintaining until the holidays. He put on a few pounds and has been fighting with them ever since. In the middle of February, he recommitted to his goals for the new year and vowed to keep his daily tracking sheet. Don’t be fooled by the Monster…

My eleven year old and I have been having this constant battle over Monster beverages.  Noah feels that he needs one because all his friends are drinking them.  I withhold few foods from him, but on the energy drinks I draw the line.  I’m constantly reminding him that energy should come from eating healthy foods and exercise.  Most energy drinks are high in sugar and caffeine. There are the low sugar versions, but the caffeine is the same, if not higher.

Food manufacturers list what is considered a normal, standard portion size on the nutrition facts label. How does that portion compare to what you are actually eating? Often times the amount we choose to eat exceeds the amount listed on the label. If you eat twice the serving size, you have eaten double the calories. To keep your calories and portions in control, eat what is listed on the label. Warning: You may have to use measuring cups and spoons or a food scale.

Let’s Eat More Like School Lunch

I admit it sounds crazy. I am asking you to eat more like the lunches that your kids are served. I am not asking you to eat what the schools serve now, but what they will be serving next school year.


New USDA nutrition standards for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) were released January 25 and are to be implemented July 1, 2012. This will be no easy task.

Bill Eats Smart -Month 8

It's the 8th month of Bill's weight management program. Lately, Bill has been eating not so smart.  


My husband, Bill, lost 20 lbs and reached his goal weight back in August. Since then he has been working in maintenance mode. After the holidays Bill was committed to lose the few pounds he regained during that eating fest.
