Walking in the rain, just walking in the rain

Walking in the rain, just walking in the rain

It has been a mighty wet spring in Vancouver and we are still waiting for summer. It rains  a lot up here, and it has been record setting in the past  four weeks.  The rain doesn't slow down people from getting out there and being active. Unlike fair weather walkers in Reno (where I lived for many years) who don't go out because it's too hot, it's too cold, it's too windy, there's a raindrop, I see people out here being active unless it's raining sideways. When it rains, the walkers pop open their umbrellas and hit the trails.…

Can you give me any recommendations on Protein powders?

Can you give me any recommendations on Protein powders?

Can you give me any recommendations on Protein powders? I went to my last Nutritionist appointment today and she informed me I need to start finding ones I like before my surgery. I do not have a surgery date yet but am told by my doctor that once I finish my last visit with him which is on the 18th of June they will submit to my insurance company and I could be scheduled the middle of July. Thank you for any help in this matter.

Sincerely
Nicole Smith

Does this look like a “fitness breakfast”

Does this look like a “fitness breakfast”

Good-bye Mickey and Friends

With expired  park passes, a later flight, and thoroughly exhausted, we decided to order breakfast room service.  This a photo of the "fitness breakfast" for ONE that was delivered. Does this look like a "fitness breakfast" to you? If you look closely you will see 2 cups of oatmeal, a large bran (high fat) muffin, about 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup half and half, 12 oz. juice and various condiments. Please note there is 1 cup fruit, 2 tablespoons nonfat yogurt, and 1 cup nonfat milk.  If you were to eat all of this…

“It’s a small world”... but not the portion sizes

Posted Saturday, May 29, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

Disneyland Day 2

"It's a small world"... but not the portion sizes. We had dinner at one of the in-park restaurants that served only sandwiches and salads. As I was standing in line with my tray, I saw that the gal was slicing and weighing out each portion of beef and turkey on a food scale. I was happy to see this but when I asked how much was the weight of meat for each salad, I was told it was 6 ounces. A standard serving is 3 ounces so once again, people are given double servings. This…

The Happiest Place on Earth

Posted Friday, May 28, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

Disneyland, The Happiest Place on Earth. Walking around the park it's easy to see why Americans are called the fattest country on earth. It is sad to see so many overweight children.

We are visiting here with my two grandsons, age 2 and 4, neither of whom are overweight. Interesting to see that they both stop eating when they have reached the point of full. The ice cream was left to melt because they knew they were finished. Somewhere along the line most of us have lost that. And wouldn't it be great to have that back?» Read more...

Limit your intake of processed foods.

Posted Monday, May 3, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

You may think you're eating healthy but if you are eating a lot of highly processed foods you are wrong. Did you know that about 75% of daily sodium intake comes from salt added by food manufacturers? Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" is book worth reading if you care about what you eat. Just remember this advice from his book and you will improve your health. Fresh is best!

White Bread

Posted Thursday, April 29, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

I was out and about running errands and lunch time arrived. I ran into Subway to get a quick bite. There was an older gentleman in line in front of me. He wanted his sandwich on whole wheat and was told they were out of whole wheat. He grimaced. They offered him white bread. He made another face and walked out without ordering. Maybe if we all grimaced at the thought of eating white bread and walked out of the restaurants we might get more eating establishments offering whole wheat bread in addition to the empty white bread. P.S.…

When I came across your website I was so happy…

Hi Chef Dave,

My name is Cheryl and I am now home recuperating from my lap band surgery 5 days ago. I have been having a rough time of it (didn't help that I developed an infection) and thanks to your website, I've actually put a smile on my face for the first time since my surgery!!! I've been very low and upset about my limited meal options (I'm an avid cook and love experimenting with new dishes) and have been wondering whether the surgery was the best choice for me.

Low Carbs Better Variety

Posted Friday, April 2, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

I am a bariatric coordinator for my local hospital.  Our patients are taught to eat very low carb diet for the rest of their life.  The easy way to do that is meat and greens, however it gets old fast. Do you have any suggestions of how we can have low carbs and have a better variety?

Thanks

Celebrating Special Days

Posted Friday, February 20, 2009 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Diet Advice

A postoperative patient asked me about going out to eat to celebrate a birthday. The concern was that the menus offered would not provide options for a gastric bypass patient. This got me thinking about all the events in our lives that are celebrated with food. The norm is to go out to dinner for birthdays, anniversaries, or celebrating good news but does it have to be? Maybe it is time to try something different to celebrate those special days.
