Eat dinner at the table.

Posted Monday, August 30, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Monthly Tip

Where do you eat dinner? Are you usually parked in front of the TV? If so, clean off the table and move mealtime where it belongs. Whether you are trying to slow down your eating, chew more thoroughly, or savoring each bite it's easier to do it without the distraction of the boob tube. Even better, gather the whole family at the table and share time together. There is plenty of research that shows eating at the table can help you better manage your weight, improve meal quality, and help your kids do better in school and stay out…

Take time to check with your pouch or stomach…

Posted Monday, August 30, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Healthy Eating

Just spent a fun-filled (and exhausting) four days with my grandsons, ages 2 and 4. I love watching them eat. The oldest is a "picky" eater, inspects his food, and asks if it has vegetables in it before he will try it. Even without vegetables odds are he won't try it. The youngest, will just take a food and give it a try. Even with two different approaches to eating, they have one thing in common. They don't overeat. When they have had enough they simply stop eating no matter what or how much food is left on the…

Try a new fruit or vegetable.

Posted Sunday, August 1, 2010 by Vicki Bovee, M.S., R.D., L.D. in Monthly Tip
Try a new fruit or vegetable.

The farmers markets are in full swing and now is the time to experiment. Walk up and down the aisles and check out the produce. Chances are you can find something you've not tried before. Look for regional produce or ethnic foods. If you're not sure how to prepare it, ask the folks behind the counter for suggestions or go to the internet for information and recipes. Try it, you'll like it!

McDonald’s….Canadian Style

Americans are well-known for their super-sized fast food meals. Value meals and the dollar menus draw people to the restaurants not only because they are cheap, but the convenience of drive-thru has made these meals a staple for some folks.  It's no mystery to me why people eat there. All you have to do is push a button to lower the window, hand over a few bucks, and within several minutes you get a meal that requires no prep or clean up.

Recently at a Vancouver bariatric support group I heard it mentioned that McDonald's features a "Canadian…

The Expert’s Guide to Weight Loss Surgery is sure to help you get ready for life-changing surgery

Anyone of you remember that great show on TLC several years ago called "Big Medicine"?  I loved that show and was so disappointed when they took it off the air. One of the surgeon stars of the show, Dr. Garth Davis, has written a book for anyone contemplating or in the preoperative stages of weight loss surgery. I have read many a weight loss surgery book and this one is one of the best. If you watched the show, you can hear Dr. Davis's voice talking to you while you read. It's comprehensive, easy to understand, and…

Yes I ate a marshmallow…

Yes I ate a marshmallow…

After weight loss surgery we are all taught to keep sugar to a minimum and desserts are almost out of the question.  I understand the reasons behind why desserts are to be kept to a minimum.  First, we don’t have much room in our pouch so we want to only put good nutritious foods in.  Second, depending on which weight loss surgery you had, dumping can happen which cause you not to feel well.  Lastly, dessert and high sugar foods is one of the reason why some, if not most of us had a problem with weight gain.   So…
